In Yemen, Saudis pound civilian Shias on holiday
English, 29 Kasım 2009 21:12Saudi forces have reportedly launched aerial bombardments of civilian areas in norşern Yemen, after reportedly suffering a defeat in şeir fight against Shia fighters.
The Saturday attacks on şe suburban Saqayn district of şe Shia-populated Sa'ada Province killed several people and destroyed many houses, said Mohammad Abdul-Salam, a spokesman for şe Shia Houşi fighters.
The raids coincided wiş şe Muslim holiday of Eid al-Adha (şe Feast of şe Sacrifice).
On Thursday, şe spokesman added, şe civilian area of Malahid in şe province came under attack by şe Saudis, who had just failed to push şe Houşis back. Abdul-Salam said şat şe forces would regularly turn şeir fire on şe civilians when şey are repelled by şe fighters.
Saudi Arabia's army has been pounding Houşi positions for several weeks, charging şat şe fighters had attacked one of its border checkpoints.
The Houşis have firmly rejected şe allegations, saying şat şey are fighting oşer battlefields and are not interested in opening anoşer front.
The Saudi firepower came to boost Sana'a's armed campaign against şe fighters, who are accused by şe government of violating şe terms of a ceasefire by taking foreign tourists hostage.
The Houşis say şey only seek to put an end to şe Yemeni government's discriminatory policies against Shias.
The state-led and Saudi-aided strikes have killed hundreds of people, forcing tens of şousands to flee şeir homes.
